Just a sense of it!

The last step is always the background!

In thread painting, I use my hands to guide the fabric under the needle of a domestic sewing machine.

Susan’s current work is a suite of art pieces depicting rare and endangered species in and around the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. These "Thread Paintings" are free-hand sewn with English cotton fabrics and Italian threads. This work expresses my desire to move beyond realism by using fabric and thread as my “paints”. The result is often surprising and always satisfying. The hope is that the viewer will recognize the work from a distance as an animal they may recognize, but quickly be drawn closer to the piece to understand the intricacy of the fabric and threads used to present it. Susan Fay Schauer John is a multidimensional artist with recognized talent in woodturning, oil portraiture, and fiber arts. Her work has been represented by galleries from San Francisco to Washington D.C. and is in numerous private and museum collections including the permanent collection at the White House.
