Female Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus)

Conservation status: Blue crabs are not threatened or endangered. However, habitat loss and nutrient loading are some of the larger issues faced by this species. In addition, recent reports have shown that blue crabs are projected to be detrimentally impacted by climate change.

“She Crab”
Chesapeake Series 2021

English cotton fabrics, Italian Threads on cotton.

Framed dimensions (inches) 27.5 H x 34 W

Price: $5395

Artist notes: I loved painting this sweet girl with hundreds of pieces of cotton fabric and threads. She draws you in and “asks” you to look closely at each part of the image. There is an image of a reclining woman at its center. This “goddess” figure is to remind the viewer that this is a mature female blue crab called a “sook”. Once a conservation concern, in 2008 there has been a female-specific fishing management of the blue crab that has helped dramatically in keeping the number of crabs in the Chesapeake Bay at a stable number.
